THE NCAA Management Committee has put on the back burner the proposed ruling that will allow its players to still suit up in the league even after getting drafted and signed up in the PBA next year
There are a lot of pressing issues and more important work to be done, according to a highly-reliable Malaya-Business Insight source.
“Nag-amicable settlement kami. Hindi na muna. Huwag ng payagan na maglaro sa NCAA iyong madra-draft sa PBA,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
“Napakarami na naming ginawang changes to accommodate, hindi titigil iyong accommodation and changes if you don’t put your foot down.”
The uncertainties and the NCAA’s focus on salvaging its coming season prompted the officials to nix the proposed rule.
“Itigil na lang tutal baka useless din iyong pag-uusap kasi hindi pa naman tayo sure kung matutuloy iyong season ng basketball,” the source said.
“There are far more important matters that we have to give attention to rather than allowing those players to play in the NCAA after getting drafted in the PBA.”
Based on a long-standing rule, NCAA players could finish the season provided they ask permission from the league, they have not yet signed a contract in the PBA, and their teams are already eliminated.
The PBA Draft is set on March 14, 2021.
With the 83rd season scrapped it is likely that some of those with only one playing year left in the UAAP will decide to turn pro.
ManCom chair Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, of host Letran said the league is set to only have the four mandatory sports — basketball, volleyball, swimming, and track and field — in the second quarter next year under a school-based concept bubble.
The remainder of the 95th season was cancelled mid-March at the start of the stringent government-imposed health and safety protocols to curb the spread of the lethal pulmonary disease caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
