AFTER two drastic losses, defending champion University of the Philippines finally found its winning groove, whipping University of the East 92-75 yesterday in the 88th UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Fighting Maroons crashed the winner’s circle, thanks to guard Rey Remogat, who notched a double-double performance of 21 points and 11 assists to go with seven rebounds and two steals against his former team.

Big man Francis Nnoruka and Gani Stevens also made key contributions for the Katipunan-based crew with identical numbers of 14 markers and 10 boards, while Gerry Abadiano added 10.

“For me, of course, iyong mga ganitong panalo would always feel positive, especially if it’s our first win,” UP coach Goldwin Monteverde said. “For me, more than the win, it’s how we played this game today.

“It’s understanding that we need each other to achieve something big,” he added.

UE center Precious Momowei tallied a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds while Wello Lingo and John Abate chipped in 18 and 15 markers, respectively.

The Red Warriors fell to 0-3.
