AN emphatic win and a key player’s birthday.

The Gilas Pilipinas Youth squad celebrated both last Sunday night, blasting Syria 112-48 to launch its drive on a high in the FIBA Under-18 Asian Championship at the Azadi Basketball Hall in Tehran.

Fil-Australian big man Mason Amos, who turned 18 last Sunday, notched 26 points, four rebounds, and two steals for the young Filipino dribblers, while EJ Abadam added 19 markers, six boards, and seven steals.

Seven Gagate also had 19 and 13 for Gilas Youth, which shot 32-percent from the arc and 52-percent from the field.

Joshua Coronel wound up with 10 points for Gilas Youth, while Kristian Porter had eight and a game-high 13 caroms.

The Josh Reyes-mentored Gilas Youth side battled Qatar last night in Group C in its bid to gain a berth in FIBA U-19 World Cup in Hungary next year.

Amos, who is set to suit up for Ateneo in the UAAP, anchored a fiery 35-7 start for Gilas Youth that the Filipinos stretched to a 53-16 spread at the half.

After taking an 87-24 edge heading into the payoff period, Gilas Youth hardly met resistance from the Syrians and took a 106-35 bulge on a Porter basket with 4:37 left in the fourth.

George Kastntin was the lone bright spot for Syria with 12 points.

The accumulative records of all the squads from all the groups will determine which teams will advance to the quarterfinals of the tourney.
