WITH its 2021 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Division A tournament campaign already in tatters, the Gilas Pilipinas women squad is setting its sights on the next important task.
The Filipina cagers seek to avoid relegation when they tangle with India today at the Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan. The classification match is set at 12 a.m., with the loser getting relegated to Group B.
Despite getting drubbed in all its three matches in the elimination round, coach Pat Aquino is keeping his faith on his charges.
“We have to win. That’s the main point. I think the target is to stay in Level I. I know it’s been really hard, tough games previously, but we feel that we can play our very best against India,” Aquino said.
“I think with the experience the girls have already after three games, they know that they have to adjust and probably to do little things more to win the game,” he added.
Gilas absorbed a 52-93 shellacking at the hands of Chinese Taipei yesterday.
Afril Bernardino paced the nationals with 24 points, to go with 14 rebounds, three assists, and two steals but did not get the much-needed help from her teammates.
Clare Castro had 14 markers and six boards.
Aquino is hoping the Filipino belles will finally get one win.
“This will be very tough. I think India brought some tall players this time, and I brought some small players this time also. So, it’s gonna be very tough,” he said.
