THE Gilas Pilipinas women’s and men’s 3×3 youth teams have returned to the country after triumphant stints in the FIBA 3X3 Youth Nations League-Asia Pacific 1.
The Philippine Sports Commission staff yesterday welcomed the Nationals after they landed at the Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City.
The Gilas women’s 3×3 quartet came off victorious run in the week-long tournament held in Doha, Qatar.
The Gilas cagebelles, bannered by Kacey Dela Rosa, Kristine Cayabyab, Cheska Apag, and Cielo Pagdulagan ruled the women’s division of Stop 5, and finished the meet with a total of 460 points last Tuesday.
Dela Rosa dropped 11 points in Gilas’ 21-14 victory against Chinese Taipei in the final.
The Philippines earlier beat hosts Qatar and Singapore on the way to the top of Stop 5.
With the result, the Anton Altamirano-mentored Gilas women bagged four titles in the contest, winning Stops 1, 2, 4 and 5, to secure their ticket to the FIBA 3×3 U-23 World Cup slated for Sept. 17 to 21 in China.
The Pinay 3×3 dribblers failed crash the podium in Stop 3, while they copped the bronze medal in Stop 6.
In the men’s side, Nic Cabanero, Antonio Eusebio, James Payosing, Sean Torculas, Irene Galas, and Zedjay Etulle also made the country proud with six bronze medals in all six stops.
The Gilas men’s team, however, fell short of qualifying for the World Cup after a third place finish in Stop 5.
