For Alas, it’s time to move on

LOUIE Alas is not one to cry over spilled milk. Or, in this case, spilled fuel.

“Year 2020 nawala ang trabaho ko pero tatlong babae naman ‘yung pumalit: si Amy, ‘yung wife ni Junjun; si Selina, ‘yung wife ni Kevin; at si Kamryn. So saan ka pa, ‘di ba?” said Alas, referring to his two new daughters-in-law and granddaughter.

“Kahit sinasabi mo nga na sobrang saya tapos napalitan ng lungkot kahapon. Pero hindi mapapalitan ‘yung saya na nakuha namin du’n sa pagkawala ng isang trabaho,” added Alas on The Chasedown last Saturday.

“Sabi nga, may isang pintong magsasara, maraming bintana naman ‘yung bumubukas.”

Only the day before, Fuel Masters management announced it has fired Alas but did not give any reason for abruptly severing their three-year tie.

Alas offered a probable one.

“Nung pagpirma ko sa kanila dito, ang sinabi ko sa kanila: ‘If you feel na ‘yung performance ko is nagdi-dip na, wala kayong kailangang gawing justification whatsoever.’ Just let me know,” he related.

“Maliwanag naman ‘yung usapan namin, performance-based ‘yung kontrata ko,” added Alas, who amassed a 33-33 record with the team he joined in 2017.

After reaching the Philippine Cup semifinals for the first time in last season’s Philippine Cup Phoenix missed the playoffs in the last two conferences, a slide attributed chiefly to the indefinite suspension on Calvin Abueva early in the Commissioner’s Cup.

Apparently, management took to heart what Alas said when it arrived at the decision with “much deliberation” last Friday.

Alas, whose contract with Phoenix was set to expire on Oct. 31, fired a tweet last Saturday and thanked the players and management for the chance to coach the Fuel Masters.

“Coaching the Phoenix Fuel Masters for the past (three) years has been a great honor and privilege to me, and I thank the entire management, headed by Boss Dennis Uy (Phoenix team owner) for giving me support during my tenure,” Alas tweeted.

“I have great respect for all the players I have coached, and I also want to thank all the coaches I have worked with who poured out their hearts and their efforts to the goal we envisioned to attain,” added Alas.
