GINEBRA coach Tim Cone beamed at how the Kings showed up against the Elasto Painters last Wednesday night.
“We haven’t put a good game together at this conference and tonight was one of those games where everything came together. We played well defensively, we executed really well offensively, and we shot the ball well. So, it was really our best game of the conference and it couldn’t come at a better time right now.
“We’re struggling to get into that top six position and getting ready for the playoffs. So I’m really pleased with the effort everybody had tonight,” he added.
Cone spoke after his wards clobbered the Painters 120-92 to get back on track in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The runaway triumph made up for Ginebra’s 86-91 loss to TNT Friday last week and allowed the Kings to improve to 7-4 for fifth.
Resident import Justin Brownlee totaled 29 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists for the Kings while former MVP Scottie Thompson backed him up with 22 markers, six boards, and eight dimes.
RJ Abarrientos, Troy Rosario, and Japeth Aguilar also had 14, 14, and 12 points, respectively, for Ginebra.
Now Cone and the rest of his squad are setting their sights on their final game of the eliminations against the Meralco Bolts Wednesday next week at the Smart Araneta Coliseum as they bid to make it at least to the top six.
“All we can do is control what we can control and that’s ourselves. We always talk about it. We try not to look at the standings too much because if you’re down in the standings, you put a lot of pressure on yourself to try to move up, you know, and it can be a distraction. You get frustrated. If you’re on top of the standings, then you get a little bit kampante,” Cone said. “So, you really try to avoid looking at the standings. We know where we are, but we also know we control our own destiny. If we can beat Meralco, then we get to that top six and at least as far as we know, we feel if we beat Meralco, we can get to that top six and we’ll take it from there. “That’s our goal, really get into the top. I mean, it’d be nice to get to the top two, but that’s out of reach already for us. So, we need to get to the top six.”
