Comeback on crosshairs of ‘Machine Gun Kelly’

DON’T look now, but Kelly Williams may just stage a PBA comeback.

A usually reliable source told Malaya-Business Insight that Williams has expressed the possibility of coming out of retirement and returning to TNT.

This was confirmed by veteran player agent Danny Espiritu, who related a recent phone conversation he had with Williams.

“’If ever I’d return to the PBA, are you willing to help me?’ was how Espiritu recalled Williams as saying.

“Sabi ko, ‘Yes.’  Siyempre, iyon ang isasagot ko. Alangan namang sabihin ko, ‘No.’ Ikaw naman lumapit sa akin,” added Espiritu. “Di na tumawag after that.”

It seems that was not the end of it, however.

TNT manager Gabby Cui could not be contacted for comment, but the source insisted talks have started with the center-forward dubbed “Machine Gun Kelly.”

“Everything is exploratory pa lang, pero nag-umpisa na,” claimed the insider.

“(TNT) mnagement has already reached out to Williams, but nothing definite yet,” added the source. “Matagal pa naman ang umpisa ng PBA and there’s enough time para maayos lahat.”

The PBA has targeted April 9 to kick off its 46th season.

Williams, who turned 39 earlier this month, announced his retirement last Sept. 2 while TNT was still inside the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna, preparing for the last Philippine Cup.

Appearing in the Ultimate Fan Hub podcast a day after announcing his retirement, the 2008 MVP and six-time PBA champion admitted he could have played a few years more but had to take a lot of things into consideration.

“I will say that I thought I could still play for the next four or five years strong. But sometimes, some things are out of your control, and there’s a lot of things and intricacies within the business that sometimes you just got to deal with the best way you can,” said the Oakland University product.
