Chambers named new Tamaraws coach

TWO straight seasons of failing to reach the Final Four should be enough for a proud school like Far Eastern University to make a drastic change.

The Tamaraws yesterday announced they have tapped legendary PBA import Sean Chambers as their new coach, replacing Denok Miranda.

“FEU athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of Sean Chambers as head coach of the FEU Tamaraws men’s basketball team,” the school said in a statement. “After a successful playing career in the PBA, coach Sean is excited to return to the Philippines.

“His second home and brings with him a wealth of experience with a career dedicated to education, coaching, and mentoring the youth.”

Chambers, 59, used to be a household name for the now-defunct Alaska franchise in the pro league in the 1990s when he powered the Aces to six titles as their resident reinforcement capped by a rare triple crown in 1996–the same year he bagged the best import award.

His jersey No. 20 was retired by Alaska in 2001 when he called it a career.

A native of Los Angeles, California best known for his work ethic that earned him the moniker “Mr. 100 percent,” Chambers said his goal is to steer the Morayta-based team back to the Promised Land.

“Over the years, I’ve closely observed the evolution and spirit of Philippine collegiate basketball, witnessing the remarkable growth and development of young players,” Chambers said. “I firmly believe there is ample opportunity for me to contribute to their journey towards reaching their fullest potential on and off the court. I am profoundly grateful and humbled by the opportunity to return to the Philippines as the head coach of the FEU Tamaraws.

“It is an honor to collaborate with FEU management and coaching staff, in our collective mission to reignite the winning culture at FEU.”

FEU, which annexed its league-leading 20th crown in 2015, wound up seventh twice in the 85th season (5-9) under former tactician Olsen Racela and in the last cage wars with Miranda (3-11) at the helm.

Miranda will stay as FEU head of cage program, the school said.

“(The) 86th season head coach Denok Miranda will now become the head of the FEU basketball program and will oversee the development of all FEU basketball teams from junior high up to the collegiate level,” it said.

“We ask for the support of the entire FEU community for coach Sean and coach Denok as we strive to build a championship contending program in the coming years.”
