CONTRASTING missions.
Defending champion University of the Philippines and Ateneo try to get their different goals going when they clash with separate foes today in the 88th UAAP basketball tournament at the University of Santo Tomas Quadricentennial Pavilion.
The Blue Eagles tackle the University of the East Red Warriors in the curtain-raiser set at 2 p.m., aiming to rise to 2-0 and grab the early solo lead.
The Fighting Maroons, reeling from a shocking 67-87 loss to the Growling Tigers in the opening weekend, face the Adamson University Soaring Falcons at 4 o’clock.
Ateneo pulled off an 86-83 overtime decision over Far Eastern University last Saturday, a victory the Eagles had to earn the hard way due to what their coach Tab Baldwin deemed as “making mistakes.”
“We’ve got to grow up. We’ve got to mature. Mistakes like that can cost us games we’ve already played well enough to win—and a championship team can’t afford that,” Baldwin said. “La Salle won’t make those mistakes. If we want to be slugging it out with the top teams and not just showing up to the party, then we need to learn fast.
“We’re still young, but these are talented players. I’m excited about them,” he added.
Perhaps, UP tactician Goldwin Monteverde, who is preaching his wards the art of moving on and licking their wounds fast and recover, and Baldwin are correct—this is anybody’s cage wars.
