THE Azkals drew with the Maldives 1-1 early yesterday morning (Tuesday in the Middle East) to advance to the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers at the close of the second round of the World Cup and Asian Cup qualifying tournament in the United Arab Emirates.
Veteran striker Angel Guirado pushed the Azkals ahead in the 19th minute but Ali Fasir struck with the equalizer six minutes later in the keenly-contested match at the Sharjah Stadium.
The Azkals finished the two-round series in third place with 11 points on three wins, three losses and two draws to remain in the hunt for a return trip to the Asian Cup scheduled in 2023 in China. — Bong Pedralvez
