AMID the rains brought about by typhoon “Falcon,” President Marcos Jr. yesterday said his administration can be counted upon by aspiring Filipino athletes to support them.
“I convey my utmost support to everyone responsible for this event and to all those who support us in pushing sports development in our country,” Marcos said during the opening ceremonies of the 63rd Palarong Pambansa at the rain-battered Marikina Sports Center. “I assure you that this government remains steadfast in developing the prowess of our young athletes and in championing their well-being.
“This administration believes in the transformative power of sports, not only in improving one’s strengths and agility but also in building up character and discipline,” he added.
Volleyball star Alyssa Valdez led the athletes’ oath, while PBA star Mark Barroca and another volley standout in Bea De Leon lit the torch at the sprawling venue.
Sports personalities and politicians were also present such as Dondon Hontiveros, Gilas Pilipinas women players, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, and Quezon City third district Rep. Franz Pumaren.
“Let us motivate our students to engage in physical activities so they will learn the significance of discipline and resilience in the realization of their goals,” Marcos said.
“Along with this, we will foster discipline, accountability, and teamwork, all of which are crucial for personal, social, and professional growth.”
Marcos is convinced the Palarong Pambansa will produce the country’s next generation of sporting heroes.
“I am certain that many of our participants here one day, we will be watching in international competitions as we have become a force in terms of international sports,” he said. “And these kinds of events, the Palarong Pambansa at iyong ating Panlarong Panlalawigan pati regional na laban, diyan po nagbubunga ang ating mga champion.
“Diyan po nanggagaling iyong mga sikat na Pilipino na kinikilala hindi lang dito sa Pilipinas kung hindi sa buong mundo. Iyan po ang aming inaasahan sa inyo. Let the games begin.”
Marikina is hosting the Palarong Pambansa for the first time.
