THERE’S no stopping defending UAAP champion La Salle less than a month before its title-retention bid in the 87th cage wars set to open shop on Sept. 7 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Green Archers overwhelmed Korea University 101-86 last Monday night to rule the World University Basketball Series at the Yoyogi National Stadium Second Gymnasium in Tokyo.
La Salle’s latest diadem added to the Archers’ impressive pre-season triumphs that include a PBA D-League and Pinoyliga crowns aside from a strong bridesmaid finish against pro league squads in the 39th Kadayawan Invitational basketball tournament late last month.
Coach Topex Robinson simply downplayed La Salle’s sterling showing in the off-season where it also wound up second to University of the Philippines in the Filoil EcoOil 17th ECJ Pre-season Cup last June.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to represent the Philippines in this tournament,” Robinson said. “We seized the opportunity to compete against top college teams. “Not only in Asia but also in the Pacific. It’s truly an honor for us to participate,” he added.
Reigning UAAP best player Kevin Quiambao was named WUBS MVP after averaging 15.67 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5.67 assists, including 15 markers, six boards, and 11 dimes in the final.
Robinson maintained his wards can only get better in their bid for a back-to-back.
“It’s great to see our players stepping up, especially rookies like Vhoris Marasigan and Doy Dungo. Even Matt Rubico has shown a lot of promise,” he said. “We’re excited to see these new players reinforce our veterans.
“Moving forward, this is a valuable opportunity for us before the season begins.”
The Taft-based crew became only the second Philippine quintet to win it all in the Japan meet after Ateneo two years ago.
