GRANDMASTER Joey Antonio finished ninth yesterday in the 50-plus Open division of the 30th FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championship at the Hotel Cenacolo in Umbria, Italy.
A 13-time National Open champion, Antonio scored 7.5 points with six wins, three draws and two losses, earning 700 euros (around P71,000) for his efforts. He drew his last match against Woman Grandmaster Elvira Berend of Luxembourg.
No. 1 seed Gm Zurab Sturua of Georgia ruled the event with 8.5 points with seven victories, three draw and one loss and took home 2,400 euros (P141,720). — Bong Pedralvez
