INTERNATIONAL Boxing Federation super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas is keen on facing vaunted World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association counterpart Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico in a unification clash that could possibly take place next year.
“Ganado ako sa ganyang mga kalaban at laban,” Ancajas said yesterday in an online tribute organized by the Games and Amusements Board led by GAB Chairman Baham Mitra, commissioner Ed Trinidad and GAB boxing division chief Dr. Jesusito Garcia.
Currently in quarantine at the Philippine Marines camp in Ternate, Cavite, Ancajas, a Navy chief petty officer, successfully defended his title for the ninth time with a solid unanimous decision win over tough Mexican challenger Jonathan Javier Rodriguez last April 10 at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
“Bago pa po ako naging champion, napapanood ko na siya (Estrada). Ngayon na may pagkakataon na makalaban ko sila, kukunin ko na ‘yong pagkakataon. Pagbubutihin na makasabay sa kaniya,” said Ancajas, 29, who raised his record to 33 wins, 22 by knockout, against one loss and two draws.
Estrada, 31, is one tough hombre, toting a record of 42 victories, including 28 by stoppage, and three losses.
Ancajas also wants to helping in the Olympic build-up of Tokyo-bound middleweight fighter Felix Eumir Marcial.
“Gusto namin tulungan si Eumir sa pag-prepare niya sa Olympic kaya pupanta kami sa Zamboanga para tulungan siya,” said Ancajas.
Although several pounds lighter than Marcial, Ancajas served as one of the former’s sparring partners for several months while they were both training in Los Angeles.
