FOUR boys and four girls who are all products of Philippine Swimming Inc.’s talent search and grassroots programs have qualified for the 8th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships on Aug. 30 to Sept. 4 in Lima, Peru.
Making up the national juniors’ squad are Joshua Gabriel Ang, Alexander George Eichler, Gian Christopher Santos, William White, Amina Isabelle Bungubung, Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh, Mishka Sy and Heather White, according to PSI president Lani Velasco.
“These swimmers are all promising in their respective events and we have been periodically monitoring their progress whether they have been competing and training locally or overseas. Congratulations to all qualifiers and the PSI is behind you every step of the way,” Velasco said.
She added that Ang, Sy, Mojdeh and Bungubung all belong to local PSI clubs, the White siblings live and train in Vietnam, Eichler in Germany while Santos is based in the United States.
Ang, 18, will see action in the 50 and 100-meter boy’s freestyle and 50 and 100-meter butterfly events; Eichler, 15, in the 50 and 100 and 200-meter butterfly events; Santos, 16, in the 200, 400 and 1,500-meter freestyle events, and Ruben White, 18, in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
A former Palarong Pambansa standout, Mojdeh, 16, will compete in the girl’s 100 and 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley; Bungubung, 15, 50 and 100-meter freestyle; Heather White, 15, 50 and 100-meter freestyle, 50 and 100-meter butterfly; and Sy, 17, 50, 100 and 200-meter backstroke.
