Meralco: Powering Communities

When 98 families in Camarin, Caloocan were given their very own electric meters, what they were given access to was more than just light. It also  meant access to more opportunities.

This was just one example of how Meralco and its social development arm, One Meralco Foundation (OMF), continuously works to  improve the quality of life in Filipino communities.

Power Is Transformation

What changes come with electrification? Safety, for one.  Prior to the Meralco project, many households relied on sub-metering schemes that were not unsafe, they were also fire hazards. With their own legitimate power connections, these households are now able to enjoy better quality power to run their daily lives and even small businesses.

There are more stories like this. In July 2024, 255 households in the municipality of Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan, were also the beneficiaries of electrification, replacing the previously unstable shared power from sub-metering schemes that in fact, cost more.

In Bgy, Sangandaan in Quezon City, 83 residents along Loans Street were able to considerably reduce their electricity bills by switching from paying expensive sub-meter charges to enjoying ordinary Meralco rates.

More than just households, off-grid schools and rural health institutions were also beneficiaries of electrification, enabling these communities to move toward community development by addressing these fundamental needs.

Supporting Communities Through Calamities

Beyond keeping the lights on, Meralco also showed its dedication to provide support to the people, especially in times of disaster. In the last year, Meralco sent food packs and hygiene kits to nearly 9,700 families in the course of the year.

Taking Care of the Roots While Growing Green

Two hundred and fifty indigenous coffee farmers in Bukidnon were given access to electricity, which increased their output and the opportunity for them to earn money.

Building Sustainable Communities

The results speak for themselves:

–        Improvement in  living conditions for families through reliable power access

–        More resilient communities with proper electrical infrastructure

–        Growth for local business

–        Better services from health and educational institutions

–        Protection and development in the long term for local ecosystems

Beyond infrastructure, it’s about empowering people – enabling families to improve their living conditions, helping communities become more resilient, and creating opportunities for sustainable development across the Philippines.
