Telecom providers are expected to allocate bulk of their capital expenditure this year for the improvement of their broadband network to attract new users and keep their existing subscribers.

PLDT Inc. said the home broadband business will be a major revenue growth driver this year.

“We already have about 12 million homes passed and about 5.29 million ports, by far the biggest base for ports available. By 2022 there will be a big push as Home figures as a major revenue driver for growth for PLDT,” Manuel Pangilinan, PLDT chairman, said in a statement.

PLDT Home has connected more than 800,000 households with fiber in 2021 as more Filipinos required reliable internet connection for online learning and work-from-home.

For this year, PLDT Home is expected to introduce more attractive and relevant service offers to get new subscribers.

PLDT also ramped up efforts to upgrade its homes and business customers from copper to fiber connectivity last year, a critical part of the company’s sustained network rollout nationwide,

Globe Telecom Inc. is on track to complete the migration of all its broadband subscribers to the latest fiber technology by 2022.

Globe At Home has been moving its broadband customers from DSL and Long Term Evolution (LTE) to fiber for free for over a year now.

“By 2022, all of our customers will be able to enjoy fast fiber technology capable of handling the present and future needs of the household. We will continue to guide them for an easy and smooth transition,” said Barbie Dapul, Globe At Home vice president for marketing.

Last October, Globe’s migration jumped by more than 250 percent, exceeding the 2021 target.

Converge, meanwhile, sees its capital expenditure for the year to be slightly higher than P25 billion capex spent in 2021 as it continues its network expansion.

For 2022, Converge is pursuing its Go Deep strategy, eyeing to expand its provincial backbone in Visayas and Mindanao. With the 1,800-kilometer subsea cable project connected to the 90,000-km+ domestic fiber backbone, Converge can now serve more underserved and unserved areas in the country.
