THE name Debbie Lopez might be unfamiliar to many, but the DJ and singer’s face has been lighting up the country’s most famous stretch for many months. Debbie has earned the moniker “Diwata ng Edsa” because her face is featured on 90 panels scattered across Santolan, Edsa Shangri-La, Shaw, Pasay Rotonda, Greenhills Promenade, and other locations.
She is also a well-known cosplay artist, bringing characters such as Crystal Maiden, Kotori, and Scarlet Witch to life. Now, she is ready to showcase another side of herself. She recently released her newest single, “Ang Higugmaon Ka,” a Visayan original composed by Kuya Bryan Cebu.
“Ang Higugmaon Ka” is a love anthem that translates to “Mamahalin Ka” in Tagalog. Debbie sings it with gusto–the Cebuana songstress’ voice resonated as she gave the press a sample at her launch event last Saturday at Mellow D in Quezon City.
Debbie started singing at age four, during a work trip of her father to Jamaica. Her mother later enrolled her in an international music school. She shared that music runs on her paternal side, with her uncle, Dr. Noni Espina, being a significant influence. Dr. Espina is an internationally known musician who wears many hats–something he and Debbie share.
In addition to being a singer, cosplayer, and DJ, Debbie is also interested in entering showbiz. She expressed her desire to work with her celebrity crush, JM de Guzman, with whom she exchanged text messages. He brightened her day when he expressed his desire to meet her in a birthday message.
“Tsaka nung Valentine’s Day, nagsabi ng ‘I love you,’” she shared. “Pero nag-text kami once lang. Alam niya papasok ako [ng] showbiz. Alam niya rin [yung] launching. Sinabi ko celebrity crush ko siya tapos nalaman ko na lang sila na.”
Knowing that JM is now in a relationship with Donnalyn Bartolome, Debbie said she is considering pairing up with another musician who is single.
“Si Rico Blanco, kasi may Donnalyn na [si JM],” she added.
