The New Frontier Theater was packed to the rafters last Friday as fans gathered to relive the golden era of the ‘90s with a much-anticipated reunion of the all-male dance group, Streetboys.
In the “SB90s Dance Reunion Concert,” the 11 original members — Vhong Navarro, Spencer Reyes, Danilo Barrios, Meynard Marcellano, Joey Andres, Michael Sesmundo, Joseph de Leon, Nicko Manalo, Christopher Cruz, Sherwin Roux, and Jhong Hilario — came together to celebrate their 31st year and proved to fans they still had their groove.
The Streetboys set the stage ablaze with classic moves and boundless energy. Despite the humor of catching their breaths during an amusing opening spiel, the boys showed no sign of backing down. The crowd erupted in applause as they moved to nostalgic hits like “Dying Inside,” “Star,” and “Macarena,” showcasing the unforgettable choreography that first catapulted them to stardom. The signature steps and synchrony were still sharp.
A heartwarming highlight of the night was when the Streetboys invited three lucky female fans on stage. Their tear-filled tribute to acclaimed director Chito Roño, who guided them from the beginning and became their mentor that instilled discipline in them that have guided them until their 40s and 50s, brought a poignant moment to the evening. Direk Chito was also very emotional as Sphencer, Vhong and Jhong showered him praises and thanks, underscoring the respect and admiration the group continues to hold for him.
The evening was not only a nostalgic trip but a celebration of their growth, with younger dance contemporaries joining the stage. A surprise performance by SB19 members Stell and Justin brought the house down – and spread laughs as Ppop’s current toast thanking the Streetboys for inspiring their parents.
Directed by Paolo Valenciano and produced by OPM legend Ogie Alcasid under his A-Team banner, the concert was paced perfectly, maintaining excitement without overshadowing the group. Ogie and his wife, Regine Velasquez, were among the star-studded attendees in the audience, alongside “It’s Showtime’s” Vice Ganda, Ion Perez, Ryan Bang, and executives Cory Vidanes and Malou Choa-Fagar.
From their timeless moves to their gratitude for their fans and mentor, the Streetboys’ return was inspiring and unforgettable.
