New Vivamax series “High (School) on Sex” is not the first series to tackle sex in high school, but it dares to say it as it is.
The creatives behind the film could have chosen a more subdued title, but director GB Sampedro points out, “Ibang panahon na tayo ngayon, so dapat pinag-uusapan nga natin iyan para aware ang mga kabataan sa kung ano ang mae-experience nila sa buhay nila.
Pero siyempre kailangan may mga iko-consider din tayo sa paggawa ng ganitong series.”
The director of such hits as “Kaka,” “Crush Kong Curly,” “Kinsenas, Katapusan,” and “Doblado” also believes that there will come a point that viewers will grow tired of the sexy theme. It’s a cycle, he said.
“Yung point na magsasawa, possible. [Kasi] umiikot lang ang gusting panoorin mga tao, minsan eto, minsan action, minsan comedy. Darating din sa point na maghahanap sila ng iba, kumbaga sexy theme, sexy series medyo kakasawaan. Eventually darating din siguro.
“Dun naman lalabas ‘yung mag-innovate ka,” he further said. “Dun mo babaguhin ang tema ng ginagawa mo. Duon mo ipapakita kung ano pa ang kaya mong i-offer sa audience.
Dun iikot para ‘di sila magsawa. Dapat iniiba-iba mo timpla, iiba mo kwento.”
When that time comes, Sanpedro is ready. As a director, he knows the stories that touches the heart are those that come from it.
“Naniniwala akong dapat close to home, close to heart ang mga kwento,” he emphasized, “para mas madali mo maikwento para may realidad ang kwento.”
“High (School) on Sex” follows the sexual awakening of five senior high students at Harmon Catholic University – Gibo, Wes, Mavic, Issa, and Karla.
Gibo, played by Wilbert Ross (“Boy Bastos,” “Crush Kong Curly”), is a scholar with a high libido. He’s been holding on to his girlfriend’s promise that they would go all the way after junior high, only to be left high and dry when she flies abroad. He then turns his attention to his hot teacher and every boy’s fantasy, Mrs. Salva, played by Rob Guinto (“X-Deal 2”).
Their illicit affair is going to be one for the books.
Wes, played by Migs Almendras (“The Broken Marriage Vow,” “Glorious”), wants to explore his sexuality. Gay or straight — anyone is welcome to get into bed with him. Nothing is going to stop him from being sexually authentic to himself. He gets the moniker “The Fluid.”
Issa, played by Denise Esteban (“Doblado,” “Kaliwaan”), has the reputation of being a slut.
She embraces this image, even if she is actually a virgin. She and Gibo have been friends since childhood.
Mavic, played by Angela Morena (“X-Deal 2,” “Iskandalo”), is seen as a virgin, but the truth is, she is not as innocent as she looks. She may not have gone all the way just yet, but you’ll be surprised at what she has already experienced in sex.
Karla, played by Katrina Dovey (“Doblado”), is Gibo’s ex-girlfriend who suddenly returns from the US. She comes back carrying a huge secret.
As the five students gain knowledge from their classes, they also gain experiences that help them navigate their questions not just about sex, but also about identity, family, and love. Joining them are colorful characters from the Harmon Catholic University that would make their lives even wilder — Marco Gomez, Micaella Raz, Andrea Garcia, Juami Gutierrez, Katya Santos, Sheree Bautista, Mark Carpio and more.
Sanpedro said that real students were interviewed for the materials for the series and he added that all of the members of the cast were handpicked for their roles.
“Kumbaga nakatrabaho ko na lahat ,” he said, “Pinili ko isa’t isa na maging part ng cast na ito. Aside from sa kanilang lima, pati support cast, handpicked.”
