The Philippine entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of Lily Yu Chu-Monteverde, affectionately known as Mother Lily. She died yesterday, August 4, fifteen days shy of her 85th birthday.

Her family shared the heartbreaking news with the public via a statement.

“Our mother, Lily Yu Monteverde, ended her journey at 3:18 AM this morning (August 4, 2024) to join our Creator,” it read.

“Throughout her years she has not only been a mother to her children but also the ‘Mother’ to so many generations of Filipino filmmakers who have helped define what Philippine cinema is today.

“Even to her final years, Mother Lily has served as one of the cornerstones of the movie industry, providing opportunities to filmmakers – both creative and technical – to carve their names in our popular history.

“Yet behind this veneer of accomplishment, Mother Lily was not merely a matriarch and the face of Regal Films but a true mother to artists and workers who had the chance to know her beyond the confines of work.”

Mother Lily was surrounded by loved ones in her final hours, the statement added.

The family also said they found comfort in knowing that their mother has found rest and is now reunited with their father Remy, who passed away last Monday, July 29.

Mother Lily’s death signifies the end of a remarkable era in Philippine cinema. As the guiding force behind Regal Entertainment, she shaped the careers of many beloved actors and prominent directors. Her impact on the film industry was profound, with notable productions such as “Temptation Island,” “Manila By Night/City After Dark,” “Scorpio Nights,” “Babae sa Bintana,” “Tiyanak,” “Live Show,” and the iconic “Shake Rattle and Roll” series, as well as the “Mano Po” anthology.

Under her leadership, Regal Entertainment produced hundreds of films, a testament to her dedication and passion for Philippine cinema.

Beyond her role as a film producer, Mother Lily received numerous accolades, including the “Dakilang Ina ng Pelikulang Pilipino” title from the Film Development Council of the Philippines and outstanding producer from the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors’ The Eddys.

The news of her death has resonated widely, with many outside the entertainment industry also expressing their sorrow. Senator Grace Poe was among the first to pay tribute, stating, “I’m deeply saddened to hear about Mother Lily’s passing. My Ninang Mother always believed in me and provided reassurance when I doubted myself. Her support has touched many lives, and she will always be remembered as a titan in Philippine cinema. My heartfelt condolences to her family.”

Actor-politician Lani Mercado also shared her reflections, saying, “It was only recently that I attended Father Leonardo Monteverde’s wake, and now we’ve lost Mother Lily. It’s as if love kept them together even in death. I’m grateful for her support for our family, especially for Bong. I’ll never forget her last video with Bong, playing the piano and wishing him a ‘Happy Birthday.’ Rest in peace, Mother. I owe much of my success to your guidance.”

Mother Lily leaves behind her children Winston, Meme, Roselle, Dondon, and Goldwin, as well as her seven grandchildren and one grandchild. Wake will start today, 3:30 p.m. at Valencia Events Place in Quezon City. The interment will be on Saturday, August 10 at The Heritage Park in Taguig.
