Dead men do tell tales

‘Let me repeat: dead men do tell tales. And it seems that Epstein, six years after he was found dead in his jail cell, is not yet done telling his.’

MY mom used to admonish me and my two brothers so often when we were kids and acting afraid of the dark: don’t be scared of the dead; be scared of the living.

“Matakot kayo sa buhay, wag sa patay.”

Her point was simple: dead people can’t harm you but the living can. She was dismissive of our fears of the dark, and especially of ghosts, although she would swear that when she was much younger, she saw her grandmother check in on her sleeping younger brother, just as that same grandmother was lying in state nearby.

Dead men tell no tales, we are told – and that’s why many men (and women) who know secrets that cannot be told are often “silenced” by those who will be harmed by the revelation of those secrets.

Forensic pathologists, however, will disagree: dead men do tell tales, beginning with how they died. And sometimes from there they end up telling the living so many more, including why they died and who did it!

The continuing fascination of a segment of the American public with Jeffrey Epstein, dead since 2019, raises questions, fuels doubts, and yes, creates fear about what a dead man can do. And it is a fascination that is beginning to irritate no less than the President of the United States,

In some form of “divine justice” – because for years, since 2019, this President has used the Epstein case as a rallying cry to galvanize his supporters against the Democrats and the establishment.

As a result of years of this, a significant segment of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) constituency – which has been fed and thrives on all sorts of conspiracy theories – cannot let go of the stories around the late financier who had been embroiled in a sex scandal involving minors and prominent men from both sides of the Atlantic.

For all his sexual escapades, Jeffrey Epstein ended up in jail twice: the first time he walked out of jail after copping a deal with the US Attorney for Southern Florida Alexander Acosta (who became Labor Secretary under the first Trump administration); the second time though Epstein, still pending trial, was carried out of jail stone cold dead.

MAGA and its influencers have long believed that the “establishment” led by the Democrats were keeping a lid on the story because it would damage so many; now that one of their own is President and heads the “establishment” they are astounded that he now downplays the same story of sex and scandal that he had been fanning for years.

Is it because he would end up figuring so prominently in the dead man’s tales?

The fact is, dead men do tell tales, and Donald Trump is well aware of that. And if my mother did see the ghost of her grandmother kiss the forehead of a younger brother, Trump in his sleep must be seeing so many replays of Epstein kissing young, underage women as he watched.

Let me repeat: dead men do tell tales. And it seems that Epstein, six years after he was found dead in his jail cell, is not yet done telling his.
