The church isn’t a cocoon

It’s a very small, minuscule world you live in, if you think of your church as THE WORLD.

How easy it is to be awed and mesmerized when one’s world is so small. As small as a goldfish bowl.

There are so many, many other people out there who have so much more to offer in terms of personality, talent, brilliance, skills, knowledge, wisdom, resources.

So let’s not be too awed by “church celebrities.” So many have fallen – and the Christian world was in utter shock. And in pain… pain that sometimes caused division.

They’re just people, too, these church celebrities. Flawed, just like the rest of us.

Greedy and ambitious and unethical at times, just like the “unsaved.”

Some are power-tripping, proud, and materialistic – just like creatures in the corporate jungle.

Some are ambitious, manipulative, cold-blooded.

Lacking in grace and manners, like some of us.

Rough-hewn, abrasive, yet educated, like some of us.

Some are not too bright but oozing with self-confidence– like some of us.

Church celebrities can really be quite ordinary when put side-by-side with secular celebrities.

So never make your church your whole world. Don’t idolize church celebrities or you might be severely disappointed one day. We already have been.

What matters is that we keep things in perspective.

Jesus wasn’t at all impressed by the Pharisees. They were the big names, the celebrities, the powerful ones during their time.

Yet Jesus didn’t kowtow to them. He kept things in perspective.

He came from the masses. And He went to the masses – the ordinary people – to tell them how to go to heaven.

Until now, there’s a whole world out there teeming with people who have attained much more success than the people we see in church – but they still need Jesus, despite their incredible success. We still have to reach out to them, to tell them how Jesus can save them for eternity.

There are even more ordinary people, non-celebrities out there who have yet to know Jesus as Lord and Savior. So let’s go out of our church and see if they’ll listen to us when we tell them about Jesus.

At the end of the day, the church isn’t a cocoon. We must go out into the world and tell others about Jesus.

We must tell them about JESUS. Not create advertisements for ourselves.
