‘Mahirap lang kasi we shot the film in an abandoned hospital na haunted daw and I can really feel the presence of ghosts. — Ryza Cenon’
RYZA Cenon is back on the big screen in the Viva horror movie “Rooftop” which will be shown exclusively at SM Cinemas nationwide as part of the Asian Horrorfest that will also show horror flicks from Vietnam and Thailand. How does she feel that their movie is the first film to be shown in actual theaters since the last Metro Manila Film Festival?

“Nakaka-pressure,” she says. “Kinakabahan ako kasi kami ang unang ire-release sa mga sinehan after a long time. We know people are still scared to go to cinemas, pero sana suportahan nila ang aming movie. Siempre iba pa rin ang experience watching a movie on the big screen.”
“Rooftop” is about friends on their summer break: Ellie (Ryza Cenon), Lance (Marco Gumabao), Wave (Ella Cruz), Martin (Marco Gallo), Jessica (Rhen Escaño), and Chris (Andrew Muhlach). They hold a secret party at their campus’ rooftop and play what they thought is a harmless prank on their janitor (Epy Quizon), but he ends up falling from the rooftop down to his death. Afraid of the consequences of their actions, they cover up the incident but Epy returns as a ghost to haunt them. The movie is directed by Yam Laranas.
“First time ko to work with Direk Yam at sobrang galing niya as he’s also our cinematographer,” says Ryza. “Mahirap lang kasi we shot the film in an abandoned hospital na haunted daw and I can really feel the presence of ghosts. Bata pa ako, may third eye na ako. Sa kuwarto ko, may sumisipa sa kama ko, may sumasabunot sa akin. Kaya may nakikita talaga ako doon sa set at doon na lang ako humuhugot para sa scenes na tine-terrorize ako.”
Ryza says she’s happy to be back to work. “Na-miss ko talaga ang showbiz kasi since the pandemic, hindi na ako nag-work as I gave birth. But now, I’m ready to work again dahil one and a half years old na ang baby ko. Sana, after ‘Rooftop,’ magtuloy-tuloy na.”

Abdul Rahman was just a finalist in the last “Starstruck.” But now, he gets a big break playing the role of the leading man of “Starstruck” winner Shayne Sava in GMA’s new afternoon soap, “Raising Mamay.” He says that after he read the script about Shayne taking good care of her mom who was shot in the head, played by Ai Ai de las Alas, he was able to relate to the story right away.
“Sabi ko, parang story ng buhay ko ito,” he says. “Kasi I can really relate to it as I was also taking care of my mom after she got cancer and was confined in the hospital fora long time. I shouldered paying all her bills at nang ibinalik na siya sa bahay, ako ang naging primary caregiver niya.”
As an only son, his heart was crushed seeing the ordeal his mother went through. “I really felt bad for her, seeing how her illness affected her physically and mentally. Pero with the Lord’s help, her health is now improving. She’s now eating solid foods again and is gaining weight. Pati ang voice niya na nawala, ngayon, bumabalik na. Thank you talaga kay Lord.”
So how is he and Shayne Sava now, on and off cam?
“As of now, we’re still great friends. Maski noon pa namang ‘Starstruck,’ magkaibigan na kami. I enjoy spending time with her and I always tell her that I will be her number one supporter. I will help push her until she reaches her full potential. It’s really nice to act with her kasi magaling talaga siyang umarte and she helps bring out the best in me.”

Edgar Allan Guzman considers it a big blessing that he became a part of the hit GMA primetime drama, “Widow’s Web,” that is ending this week. He plays the role of Frank Querubin, a man wrongly accused of killing the patriarch of the Sagrado Family played by Ryan Eigenmann.
“It’s a good show, the script is very well written at puro magagaling ang kasama kong artista kaya hindi kami nagtaka when it rated so high every night,” he says. “First time ko to be paired here with Pauline Mendoza who plays my girlfriend na gagawin ang lahat to prove na wala akong kasalanan sa krimeng ibinibintang sa akin. I know the show is a hit kasi everywhere I go, they ask me what will happen next at sino ba talaga ang killer, which of course, hindi ko naman puedeng i-reveal.”
Edgar or E.A. started in showbiz when he won as Mr. Pogi in “Eat Bulaga” on 2006.
“Ang haba na rin ng itinakbo ng career ko at malaki ang pasasalamat ko sa GMA as I’ve done several good projects with them through the years at hindi naman ako nababakante.
Last year, I was in two shows, ‘Heartful Cafe’ and ‘Agimat ng Agila’, at heto nga kai-start lang ng new years, nakasama naman ako sa ‘Widow’s Web’, so I cannot complain.”
From his earnings in showbiz, he’s proud to be able to have bought his mother a house and lot and he also got a lot in Tagaytay. He continues to play beautiful music with Shaira Diaz.
They have their own careers and Shaira is now busy taping the action-fantasy drama “Lolong,” opposite Ruru Madrid.
