‘Never kami nangyurak ng pagkatao — Michael V’
As a renowned comedian and director, Michael V has been making Filipinos laugh for decades with his sharp wit and impressive impersonations. Recently, he was the controversial Ciala Dismaya in the popular gag show “Bubble Gang.” But what makes Michael V’s comedy unique is his commitment to responsible humor that not only entertains but also brings awareness to societal issues.
At National Artist Ricky Lee’s book launch, Michael V readily agreed to be one of the readers from the Joel Lamangan-Ishmael Bernal repartee in the new UP Press “Agaw Tingin” book. He expressed his admiration for Ricky Lee, and was thrilled to participate in the book launch.
“Oo, kaagad! ‘Ricky Lee? Book launch? O, sige!’ Ha! Ha! Ha!” he recalled, “’Anong schedule ko nun? Wala? OK, sige, go!’”
Michael V’s approach to comedy is thoughtful and considerate. He emphasized that despite impersonating many, he and his team always make sure not to offend. “Knowing that ‘Bubble Gang’ for 30 years na namin na track record, never naman talaga kami nang offend. Never kami nangyurak ng pagkatao….”
When asked about the purpose of his Ciala Dismaya character, Michael V hinted that it would be a wake-up call for viewers.” “Mamulat…pero itong sketch namin, magulat lang!”
He believes that comedy can be a powerful tool for creating awareness about important issues. “Kung makakatulong to sa pagke-create ng awareness sa totoong nangyayari sa isyu ng mga nangyayari sa bansa natin, ‘di sige, by all ‘memes!’”
Despite facing some backlash from netizens, Michael V remains unfazed, advising people to block those who bring negativity and have nothing constructive to offer. “Kasi sa atin din ‘yung power, ‘di ba? Papaapekto ba tayo sa bashers o hindi?”
Through his comedy, Michael V aims to bring attention to the issues plaguing society, even if it’s not always funny. He expressed his concerns about the state of the country, saying, “Siyempre, hindi ako masaya kasi loyal taxpayers kami ng asawa ko\. Madalas nag-uusap kami about migrating sa ibang bansa.”
