Surprising

‘The unanimous decision was quite surprising and seemed to show that the President and his allies have broken away from the Marcoses.’

THE online TV series “The Chosen” is quite compelling to watch considering that we are all familiar with the characters.

The fresh narrative on the life of Jesus presents Him and the apostles in deeper ways, portraying their inner pains and delights, and their family relationships as well. Unlike past movies and TV series on Jesus, every scene in “The Chosen” is extended to capture the human elements and thoughts that seem to resonate and stress the impact of Jesus’ healings and miracles.

The writers took liberties with the cultural and social behaviors of the period and the scripts have turned into a welcome departure from the common text. The healings become more moving because of the human tenderness that Jesus brings as he embraces the healed paralytic, blind and leper. The catching of the fish is extraordinary; Peter’s grumbling over Jesus’ insistence to throw the net again into the water after an entire night of catching nothing suddenly is replaced by utter astonishment as a busload swims up.

The scene grows into a festivity as the followers of Jesus turn chaotic in trying to contain their huge catch. And Jesus takes on the fun and enjoys it. Losing his bluster, Peter goes down on his knees before Jesus with his prominent self-denial, “Get away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” And he asks tearfully, “And what do you want me to do?” Jesus stares deep into his eyes, replies, “Follow Me.” Mary Magdalene, after going through anguished mental and emotional struggles, is transformed from actual demonic possession to spiritual liberation; overcoming a suicide attempt drives home a spiritual victory against Satan.

Vice President Leni Robredo winning the electoral protest filed by former senator Bongbong Marcos was the least expected from the President Duterte-dominated Supreme Court acting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal. The unanimous decision was quite surprising and seemed to show that the President and his allies have broken away from the Marcoses.

The High Court stands miles away from its decision in favor of the quo warranto petition against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno that led to her ouster. Its complacency and indifference that grew louder in silence had also fed the public outrage on the forced closure of ABS-CBN.

The visibly-transparent Presidential Legal Adviser, Salvador Panelo, already speaking out against Marcos and his mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, was a sure indication the Palace and its former tenants have gone their separate ways.
