THE Philippine Embassy in Washington yesterday said no Filipino has been reported affected by hurricane “Helene” that US authorities said is one of the most powerful and costliest storms to hit the country.
“The Embassy has not received any reports of any reports of Filipinos affected by hurricane Helene,” the embassy said, adding that it is closely monitoring the situation and is coordinating with the consulates in Florida and Georgia to provide assistance to any Filipino in the two states.
There are around 300,000 Filipinos living and working in areas affected by the hurricane.
The embassy said it is also coordinating with local authorities where Filipinos are residing. It urged Filipinos to immediately contact the embassy or local authorities if they need assistance.
US authorities earlier said over 60 people have died in the hurricane but the death toll is expected to go up as search, rescue and recovery efforts are still underway.
Helene was downgraded late on Friday to a post-tropical cyclone, but its remnants continued to produce heavy rains across several states, sparking massive flooding that threatened to cause dam failures that could inundate entire towns.
