Comelec to hold plebiscite for merging, renaming of Bacoor barangays

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to hold a plebiscite in Bacoor, Cavite on July 29 for the proposed merging and renaming of its barangays.

Based on Resolution No. 10917, the Comelec said a plebiscite will be held based on the Bacoor City Ordinance No. 275-2023 which aims to trim down the number of barangays from 49 to 23.

“The Commission resolves to set the date of the plebiscite on July 29, 2023,” said the Comelec.

Based on Bacoor City Ordinance No. 275-2023, 44 barangays will be merged and renamed into 18 villages.

Five barangays are also set to be renamed.

The Comelec said the Plebiscite Period is set to run from June 28 to August 5.

During the Plebiscite Period, prohibited acts include bearing, carrying, or transporting firearms or other deadly weapons; organizations or maintenance of strike forces; suspension of local elective officials; and transfer or detail of officers and

employees in the civil service.

The Information and Campaign Period is set on June 28 to July 27.

During the Information and Campaign Period, it is prohibited to remove, destroy, or tamper lawful plebiscite propaganda while holding of barangay assemblies or “pulong-pulong” are encouraged.

On the eve of the Plebiscite Day, the Comelec said it will be prohibited to buy, serve, or take intoxicating liquor; campaign; and give, accept free transportation, foods, drinks, and other things of value.

On Plebiscite Day, voting is set from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in designated polling places.
