IT has been more than a month after Samantha Mae Bernardo captured the hearts and minds of the whole world when she finished as first runner-up at the Miss Grand International Pageant in Bangkok last March 27.
Still in Thailand with the rest of the winners for a much-deserved grand vacation, Sam is eargerly awaited by her supporters for her homecoming as the newest pride of Binibining Pilipinas. But before she does so, let’s get to know some interesting facts about this beauty-and-brains (and more!) from Palawan:
1. She can surely work those heels. Sam captivated the whole world with her signature GRANDnada Walk. But did you know that aside from her famous strut, she can do a split, cartwheel and backbending, all wearing her heels?
2. She started her career in hotels. Sam was originally a hotelier. She graduated with a degree in BS Hospitality Management from Palawan State University. She loves to interact with people from all walks of life and hear their stories.
3. She has an interest in the third kind. Sam is one of those whose imagination and curiosity has always been piqued by space. She has gained great interest in the universe, downloading films and docus about aliens and distant worlds.
4. She is a decorated athlete. With her background in gymnastics, Sam competed in several meets and has, in fact, won several medals. At the early age of 8, she has won the overall championships in rhythmic gymnastics and has also won 5 medals in a regional meet in Region IV-B. Had she chosen a different career path, who knows, she could have also won an Olympic medal!
5. She is a foodie. Sam has a deep passion for food, bulalo being her all-time favorite. Seafood, chocolate pudding and cupcakes also have a special place in her heart, and tummy!
6. She’s a folk dancer. When Sam rocked the Binibining Pilipinas and Miss Grand International stage, she did each and every step carrying a level of poise, grace and artistry that was nothing less than captivating – all because of her previous experience as a folk dancer both here and abroad that gave her the edge on the pageant stage.
7. She’s passionate about putting an end to malaria. According to the Department of Health, we have made terrific progress in controlling the spread of malaria. Yet several provinces still have transmissions of the disease, including Sam’s native Palawan. Sam now serves as the spokesperson for Malaria Free Philippines with the DOH and Kilusan Ligtas Malaria, with their goal to eradicate malaria in the country by 2030.
8. She aspires to live with no regrets. Sam’s favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 31:25 which says: “She is clothed in strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future.” Sam aims to live life to the fullest so that she can inspire others to live with no regrets.
