More Filipinos are studying abroad in search for better work opportunities and migration.
Jojo Habana, country director of IDP Philippines, said estimates place the number of Filipino students currently studying abroad at 53,000, representing a 53 percent growth year-on-year.
Habana said the market is seen growing further between 8 and 13 percent annually.
As 60 percent of Filipinos going abroad to study pursue post-graduate courses, the motivation is really to get good quality education and build a better career and/or for the possibility of migration.
Others study abroad to pursue courses not offered by local institutions.
At present, Habana said Canada is the top destination for Filipino students who are the second biggest nationality of international students after Indians in that country.
According to Habana, Filipinos are preferred by Canadian institutions as they eventually get degrees that would meet the employment requirements of Canada which targets 1.2 million immigrants by 2026.
Other top destinations are Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Ireland.
Most of the courses taken up are in business management, health, IT and analytics and hospitality and tourism. Emerging courses are engineering, age care and early childhood as well as arts and creatives.
IDP Philippines said about 47 percent of those studying abroad fund their own studies as they also plan to work part-time.
The cost of studying abroad is at least P1.8 million per year depending on the course and the institution.
IDP Education yesterday opened its additional office in Quezon City that also houses an International English Language Testing System test center.
According to Habana, IDP Education helps Filipino students fulfill their dram of studying abroad.
The company earns from the commission from the institutions where it successfully places the students. It does not charge direct fees to student applicants.
IDP Philippines offers the whole range of services from placement, career and school matching, training and counseling students to better transition and adjust to the destination country.
The company has 800 partner institutions and operates in more than 80 countries.
