What’s in a name? A lot, according to DFA

FOREIGN Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo has renamed the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs under the department into the Office of the Undersecretary for Migration Affairs to avoid confusion and distinguish it from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Eduardo De Vega, in a briefing in Malacanang yesterday, said the new name of his office will take effect once the department order issued by Manalo is published or is registered with the UP Law Center.

De Vega said some people had thought that he was under the DMW instead of the DFA because of his office’s name.

He added that some functions of his office, especially those related to assisting overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), have been transferred to the DMW but his office remains in charge of assisting other Filipinos abroad such as those traveling as tourists, Filipino students abroad and those who are permanent residents.

De Vega said his office will also focus on policy issues while the DMW will handle OFW deployment and bans, among others.
