How does it feel to be a friend of singer-songwriter David “The Hitman” Foster?

“Well, I don’t want to assume,” JV Decena breaks into a smile.

The amazing singer is ecstatic to be part of the David Foster and Friends Asia Tour 2024, happening in Manila on June 18 at 8 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum. JV mentioned it’s not his first time performing at the Araneta, nor is it his first time performing with David Foster, but the exhilaration and excitement remain.

“The first time we got acquainted was at a welcome party in 2015,” he recalled.

JV performed for David, who listened in rapt attention. After the performance, David did something totally unexpected.

“After the performance, he came up to us personally, shook our hands, and told us that we’d done a great job.

“The next day, we attended his concert and, to our surprise, he called our names. It turns out he had asked our manager for our names.

“We were new at the time and felt shy about standing up. We were just enjoying the concert.”

Nine years later, JV is now part of David Foster and Friends, along with the likes of Brian McKnight, All-4-One, and David’s wife, Katharine McPhee. Filipino WCOPA winner Joaquin Garcia is also featured in the show.

“Maybe that was our first connection. Right after that, whenever we had time and were nearby, we would visit and talk to him.

“That’s how approachable he is. That’s how appreciative he is of talent. I think that’s why we’ve formed this bond.”

Just like a good friend, JV said David gives solid advice.

“It’s more of a friendly conversation every time,” JV related.

“And what I always remember, which he always says to the people he invites on stage, is: ‘Hit big, hit home. Do your best every time you open your mouth.’”

One thing he observed about the 74-year-old music genius is that regardless of the audience, the country, or the venue, David has the same effect on people. Music breaks barriers, and David hits the audience’s heart every time.

“It’s the magic of David Foster, ‘The Hitman.’ Whatever piano he’s holding, whatever the venue, it’s not the venue, it’s not the equipment… maybe it’s really ‘The Hitman,’” JV said with a touch of reverence.
