THE number of earthquakes recorded at Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon continued to go down yesterday as the volcano remained at low-level unrest.

During the latest 24-hour monitoring period (5 a.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday), only 10 volcanic quakes were recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In the previous monitoring period (5 a.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday), 69 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, including 56 volcanic tremors which lasted for 19 minutes.

There were 106 volcanic earthquakes recorded, including 48 volcanic tremors that lasted for 20 minutes, from 5 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.

In its 24-hour observation report yesterday, Phivolcs said plumes, which drifted southwest and west-southwest, reached as high as 500 meters, from the previous 750 meters.
Phivolcs said Bulusan Volcano emitted 4,627 tons of sulfur dioxide.

It said the volcano’s edifice remains inflated, adding a similar phreatic eruption may still occur.

Bulusan started to become restive on June 5. Its phreatic or steam-driven eruption prompted authorities to raise Alert Level 1(low-level unrest). Another phreatic eruption occurred last Sunday.

Hundreds of residents have been displaced, particularly due to ashfall, but they have returned to their homes, according to officials.
