UNITED States Joint Special Operations Command chief Lt. Gen. Bryan Fenton has vowed continued American support to the Philippine military in the war against terrorism.

Fenton made the assurance during a courtesy call on AFP Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) chief Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr. at the WestMinCom) headquarters in Zamboanga City yesterday.

In a statement, Wesmincom said Fenton “vowed to sustain the strong cooperation between the US and Philippine military.”

“He further said that the US troops are committed in assisting the command until the coveted peace and development in Southern Philippines is achieved,” the statement said.

It said Fenton and Rosario discussed “possible ways to broaden efforts between the WestMinCom and US troops.”

“Our partnership is grounded on our iron-clad commitment to shared security. We will continue to work hand-in-hand to eradicate the extremists and terrorists. We admire your strategic and operational approaches in fighting against the terror groups that threaten international security. We are here to solidify further our alliance for the common good,” Fenton said.

Rosario thanked Fenton for the continued US military support, saying: “Rest assured that we will continue to strengthen our good relationship as we work together to fight against terror.”

Meanwhile, Filipino and American special forces launched in Nueva Ecija last Monday a three-week military exercise that will improve the interoperability of the two elite units in various field of operations.

Army spokesman Col. Xerxer Trinidad said the exercise, dubbed Balance Piston 22-1, started after brief opening rites at Fort Magsaysay, home to the Army’s Special Forces Regiment-Airborne (SFRA).

Trinidad said the exercise, which will run until March 7, will involve a company of soldiers, about 100 to 120 men, from the SFRA and US Special Forces.

Trinidad said the exercise “provides an avenue to Filipino and US Special Forces to learn and exchange tactics, techniques, procedures, and best practices.

“It also tests and validates plans, procedures, and concepts to enhance collaboration and interoperability between Filipino and US Special Forces,” said Trinidad.

Trinidad said the exercise seeks to reinforce the thrust of Army chief Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. “to enhance the skills of soldiers and competencies of Army units to further empower them in mission accomplishment.”
