UNIVERSITY of the Philippines has emerged as the top Philippine higher education institution in the 2023 Quacquarelli-Symonds Asian University Rankings ranking.

The premiere state university stood at 87th place in the Asian university rankings while Ateneo de Manila University was ranked 134th, De La Salle University 171st and University of Sto. Tomas 175th.

Last year, UP stood at 69th overall.

The other Philippine universities in the ranking were Silliman University (551 to 600), Mapua University (551 to 600), Ateneo de Davao University (551 to 600), Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology campus (601 to 650), Xavier University (651 to 700), and Saint Louis University (651 to 700).

In 701st to 750th place were Adamson University, Central Luzon State University, Central Mindanao University, Central Philippine University, Cebu Technological University, Lyceum of the Philippines University and University of San Carlos.

In terms of their rankings in the country, UP was tops, followed by Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle and UST.

The QS Asian University rankings features 760 universities in the region, with China’s Peking University emerging as tops, followed by National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, the University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.

In sixth to 10th places were Fudan University in Shanghai, China; Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China; Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Daejeon, South Korea; Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Among the key indicators used to determine the rankings are academic and employer reputations, the number of staff holding a PhD degree and the percentage of international students enrolled.

The other criteria used were faculty to student ratio, international research networks and linkages, citations per paper and papers per faculty.

“This set of criteria, developed in consultation with regional experts and stakeholders, is designed to reflect key priorities for universities in Asia, drawing on as much available data as possible,” QS said in a statement.

The QS university rankings have been published on an annual basis since 2009.

Ateneo de Manila University dethroned UP in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University ranking that was released last month.

After not being included in the rankings in 2021, Ateneo surged to the 351-400 bracket while UP sank to the 801-1,000 bracket.

Last year, UP was in the 600-801 ranking.

UP had led all Philippine higher education institutions in the Times ranking in previous years.

De La Salle and Mapua also made it to the Times list, placing 1,201 to 1,500 and 1,501, respectively.
