Tropical depression enters PH

A TROPICAL depression entered the Philippine area of responsibility yesterday and was named “Quiel,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Quiel may intensify into a tropical storm but it is unlikely to make landfall, PAGASA also said.

In an 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Quiel entered the country at around 8 a.m. It will bring occasional heavy rains to northern Luzon, Zambales, and Bataan.

As of 10 a.m. yesterday, the center of Quiel was some 540 km west southwest of Iba, Zambales, moving east northeast at 10 kph. It was packing sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

It is projected to be 400 km west southwest of Iba, Zambales this morning.
