THE transport group Malayang Alyansa ng Bus Employees at Laborers (Manibela) has suspended its three-day transport strike, which began last Monday, due to the inclement weather caused by super typhoon “Egay.”
Manibela president Ma Valbuena announced the suspension on his Facebook page last Monday night.
“We’re officially announcing that the transportation strike will be suspended tomorrow… The transport strike is suspended because there is a threat of heavy rainfall,” said Valbuena.
Manibela added it suspended the strike at the request of Malacanang officials.
It said “people from Malacanang” requested to suspend the transport strike because classes have resumed and commuters may have difficulty in their travels due to the lack of public utility vehicles, compounded by heavy rains.
Manibela added that commuter groups also requested to suspend the transport strike due to the inclement weather.
The group said it will hold transport strikes in the future if the government will not act on their grievances in connection with the government’s PUV modernization program.
Last Monday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said the first day of the transport strike, which coincided with the second State of the Nation Address of President Marcos Jr., failed to paralyze or even make a dent in public transport in the metropolis.
Government agencies, including the Armed Forces and the PNP, deployed vehicles to transport commuters who were affected by the transport strike.
