THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) yesterday said it is targeting the transfer of 15,000 inmates of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City to provincial prison and penal farms by the end of the year.
This as 500 more Bilibid inmates were transferred to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm yesterday where they will be housed at two newly-constructed facilities designed to accommodate 2,500 inmates.
“Our target is to transfer about 15,000 persons deprived of liberty this year to various operating prison and penal farms of the bureau as part of our decongestion program,” BuCor director general Gregorio Catapang Jr. said.
“So far, we have transferred 4,600. Hopefully, we will hit the target by the end of the year,” Catapang added.
Aside from the NBP and the Davao Prison and Penal Farm, the BuCor also operates the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro; Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte; and the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City.
