DEATHS from the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continued to soar as 191 more patients succumbed to the deadly virus while 5,484 new cases were reported by the Department of Health yesterday.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said the death toll rose to 25,650, still the second highest in Southeast Asia, for a case fatality rate of 1.76. Indonesia has the most deaths in Southeast Asia — 62,908 — as of Wednesday.
The number of infections in the country rose to 1,455,585 while active cases climbed slightly to 49,036 from 47,519 last Wednesday, with 90.9 percent mild cases, 3.7 percent asymptomatic cases, 2.2 percent severe cases, 1.6 percent moderate cases, and 1.5 percent critical cases.
The DOH reported 3,925 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 1,380,899.
This means that 94.9 percent of COVID patients have recovered.
Six more new cases among overseas Filipinos were reported by the Department of Foreign Affairs, raising the total to 20,922 in 95 countries and territories.
The DFA also reported two new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 1,245.
Most of the cases and deaths were recorded in the Middle East and African regions with 11,861 and 836, respectively.
The Americas has the lowest number of cases among the Filipino community with 987 but has the second highest death toll with 245.
The Asia Pacific region reported 4,520 cases since last year but 34 deaths while Europe recorded 3,554 cases and 130 deaths.
The DFA reported no new recoveries. Since the start of the pandemic, 12,381 overseas Filipinos have survived the deadly virus. — Ashzel Hachero
