Text scams continue despite SIM Card law

SUPREME Court Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen yesterday complained about receiving numerous bogus text messages despite the effectivity of the SIM Registration Act.

The SIM Registration Act, or Republic Act No. 11934, was enacted to end crimes, such as text and online scams, by regulating the sale and the use of SIMs through mandating registration to end-users.

Leonen, through his social media account, said he continues to receive text scams even after blocking multiple numbers already.

He shared a screenshot of a sample message he recently received encouraging text recipients to register their numbers to “enjoy exclusive perks” such as a 120 percent daily cash back, daily log in bonuses of up to P888, and a chance to win a Yamaha motorcycle.

“Marami pa ding scammer (There are still a lot of scammers). Everyday I get about 3 or 4 and I already blocked hundreds,” Leonen said.

Leonen is the only magistrate in the 15-member SC who has an active social media account.

The passage of RA 11934 was supposed to deter or put a stop to bogus texts, with Malacañang and lawmakers calling its passage a victory against rampant text scams.

But apparently, Leonen said, this has yet to happen. — Ashzel Hachero
