ABOUT a third of adult Filipinos are competent in the Filipino language while close to half are competent in English, the March 26 to 29 survey of the Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.
The survey, which involved 1,200 adult respondents with a margin of error of ±2.8 percent, showed that 75 percent of Filipinos are competent in the Filipino language while 47 percent said they are competent in the English language.
SWS said 53 percent of the respondents claimed they fully use the Filipino language while 29 percent said they fairly use it, 15 percent partially use it, and 4 percent said they “almost not use” Filipino.
It added that 93 percent are able to read in Filipino while 93 percent understand spoken Filipino; 93 percent can write in Filipino and 75 percent think in Filipino. One percent said they do not use Filipino in any of the said skills.
The polling firm also found that 9 percent fully use the English language while 35 percent fairly use it, 41 percent partially use it, and 14 percent said they “almost not use” English.
It added that 80 percent of Filipinos understand spoken English; 80 percent can read English; 69 percent can write in English; and 47 percent can think in Filipino. Nine percent said they do not use English in any of the said skills.
The SWS’ results were released at a time when the country is celebrating the Buwan ng Wika.
