POLICE operatives arrested yesterday a businessman involved in last Tuesday’s road rage shooting incident at the Edsa Ayala tunnel in Makati City that led to the death of a family driver.
Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr presented the suspect, Gerard Raymond Yu, during a press briefing at the PNP national headquarters at Camp Crame.
Yu was nabbed at his residence at Riverside Village in Pasig City at around 7 a.m. yesterday.
Seized from him were two caliber 40 pistols. One of them was used in the shooting, based on ballistics examination.
Also seized from the suspect was the Mercedez Benz he was driving when he shot the victim, Aniceto Mateo, 65, the driver of a Toyota Innova van.
Police said Yu and Mateo figured in a traffic altercation at the southbound lane of the Edsa Ayala tunnel last Tuesday afternoon. Yu later opened fire at the van, causing Mateo’s death
Closed-circuit television footage showed the two vehicles were moving at the time of the shooting.
The passengers of the van, a female and a seven-year-old child, were not hurt.
“The PNP leadership is now preparing to file a case of murder against the suspect and we are committed to bringing justice to the victim and his loved ones,” said Abalos.
Abalos said the PNP has a solid case against the suspect, noting the evidence seized from him.
Abalos said the suspect tested positive during a paraffin test, adding the police have witnesses who identified Yu as the gunman.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said the suspect has a license to own and possess firearms but not the permit to carry firearms outside his residence.
“He is not authorized to bring his firearms outside (his residence),” said Marbil.
National Capital Region Police Office director Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr said all they know so far is that Yu is a businessman.
