“ROSAL” has intensified into a tropical storm, from tropical depression, as it continued to move away from the Philippine landmass.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Rosal was some 880 km east of extreme northern Luzon as of 4 p.m. yesterday.

It was moving east northeastward at 15 kph, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

Rosal turned into a tropical storm on Sunday night. PAGASA earlier forecast Rosal to strengthen into to tropical storm on Monday morning.

“Due to unfavorable environment conditions associated with the surge of the northeast monsoon, Rosal is forecast to rapidly weaken and may become a remnant low tomorrow (Tuesday) late evening or on Wednesday early morning before dissipating shortly thereafter,” PAGASA said.

PAGASA said Rosal, the country’s 18th tropical cyclone this year and the first for this month, is not directly affecting the country.

“Rosal is less likely to directly bring heavy rains (which may trigger flooding or rain-induced landslides) in the country throughout the (24-hour) forecast period,” PAGASA said.

Rosal was forecast to weaken into a tropical depression later yesterday before further weakening into a low pressure area today or Wednesday.

PAGASA said Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, and Apayao will have cloudy skies with light rains due to the northeast monsoon.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms due to the localized thunderstorms.
