Siphoning oil from tanker proving no easy task

SOME 121,724 liters of oily waste were siphoned off from the sunken tanker Terranova last Saturday, the largest recovery in one day since the siphoning operation started last week.

But it is still short of the 200,000 liters of oil earlier set by the salvor, Harbor Star, to recover per day.

Last Friday, the salvor managed to recover just 17,103 liters of oily waste after a booster pump malfunctioned. The booster pump had been fixed.

On Monday last week, the first day of the siphoning operation, Harbor Star was able to extract only 2,350 liters of oily waste from the ill-fated vessel.

Some 36,100 liters of oily waste was recovered on Tuesday; 42,026 liters on Wednesday; and 81,136 liters on Thursday.

“The contracted salvor, Harbor Star, reported over 300,000 liters of collected oily waste from 19 to 24 August 2024,” the PCG said in a statement yesterday.

“Harbor Star said that the rate of oily waste flow during the 24 August 2024 operation was 13,500 liters per hour,” the PCG added.

The vessel was carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil when it sank off Limay, Bataan last July 25 after being battered by huge waves.

The PCG said two PCG vessels, the BRP Sindangan and BRP Malamawi, have been conducting aerial surveys during the siphoning operation while Coast Guard Special Operations Force divers are performing underwater assessments.
