THE PNP yesterday reported “significant” progress in the ongoing investigation of the murder of radio broadcaster Juan Jumalon, also known as Johnny Walker, in Misamis Occidental last Sunday.

In a press briefing at Camp Crame, PNP Public Information Office chief and spokeswoman Col. Jean Fajardo said investigators now have a lead on the gunman.

“There is a significant development on the case…They have gathered information that may lead to the identification of the gunman,” said Fajardo.

Fajardo did not elaborate, saying she does not want to compromise the ongoing investigation being conducted by the Special Investigation Task Group Johnny Walker.

“They are confident that in the coming days, they will be able to file a case against the suspects,” said Fajardo, referring to the three assailants.

Jumalon was shot dead in his residence in P-2, Barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri in Calamba while in the middle of his radio program. A video of the actual shooting spread online as Jumalon’s show was being streamed live.

One of the suspects pretended he was out to make an important announcement during Jumalon’s radio program and later shot the victim. Police said there were two lookouts.

Authorities have come up with a computer-generated sketch of one of the lookouts, based on the description provided by witnesses.

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security has offered P100,000 for information that would lead to the identification of the suspects.

Fajardo said probers are investigating if the killing was due to a land dispute case involving the property where Jumalon built his house.

“That’s among the angles being investigated. We are looking into that although we are not discounting other angles regarding this case,” said Fajardo.

PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. earlier said two angles are being looked into — work-related and personal grudge.
