TROPICAL cyclone warning signal No. 1 was raised over Batanes yesterday as “Liwayway” further intensified into severe tropical storm, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Liwayway is expected to intensify into a typhoon as it heads out of the country tomorrow but it remains “less likely to make landfall,” PAGASA said.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, the center of Liwayway was some 225 km east of Basco in Batanes. It was moving north at 15 kph, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph.

Liwayway is expected to be 385 km northeast of Basco this afternoon, and 630 km north northeast of Basco (already out of the Philippine area of responsibility) tomorrow.

PAGASA said Liwayway is expected to bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains to Batanes and the Babuyan Islands.

The southwest monsoon will continue to bring scattered light to moderate rains, with at times heavy rain showers during thunderstorms, to the Ilocos, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, and Calabarzon regions, the northern portions of Palawan (including Calamian Islands), the Mindoro provinces, and rest of Cordillera Administrative Region.
