SENATORS and Senate employees will pay their last respects and give tribute to former Senate President Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. on Wednesday morning.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III will lead current and former senators as well as employees in receiving Pimentel’s remains and escorting him to the session hall.
Sotto will present a resolution to Pimentel’s family expressing the Senate’s sympathy and condolence.
Besides Sotto, also expected to deliver eulogies are Sen. Pilar Juliana Cayetano and former Senators Heherson Alvarez, Anna Dominique Coseteng and Jose Lina, Jr., among others.
Pimentel’s son, Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, is expected to accept the resolution and give his response to the eulogies.
The statesman passed away on Sunday morning after a bout with lymphoma, a form of cancer affecting the lymphatic system. His death came less than a week after his hospitalization due to pneumonia, making it difficult for him to breathe.
He served three terms as senator from 1987 to 1992 and from 1998 to 2010. He was the Senate President from November 23, 2000 to June 30, 2001, presiding over the tumultuous and eventually-aborted impeachment trial of President Joseph Estrada, who would later be deposed.
