THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has started the demolition of illegal structures at the medium security compound of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
BuCor Director General Gerald Bantag led the demolition of the illegal structures, including shanties, on Tuesday.
Bantag said the operation is in line with his vision of turning around negative public image of the national penitentiary.
“Ito lahat ay irereport natin sa taumbayan. Ang pagbabago ay patuloy na nakikita at inumpisahan natin sa loob pati dito sa labas ng mismong prison compound at sa iba pang lugar na nasasakupan ng New Bilibid Prison,” Bantag said.
The demolished structures, which are illegally situated inside the BuCor land property, have competed for space with the BuCor Personnel Training School, affecting efforts of previous BuCor officials to physically improve the facility.
“It’s high time that these unwanted structures be cleared to expand and upgrade the school which molds our future BuCor uniformed personnel,” Bantag said.
It will be recalled that after his assumption into office, Bantag immediately ordered the demolition of illegal structures and other unauthorized buildings inside the maximum security compound of the NBP.
The maximum security compound housed inmates convicted of heinous crimes such as murder and drug trafficking.
Bantag said the construction of shanties was illegal since inmates are not authorized to erect the structures in the first place as many of these shanties have become dens or secret places for illegal activities.
