SC: AI technology will make court workers ‘more efficient’

SUPREME Court Justice Alexander Gesmundo yesterday assured the Artificial Intelligence technology will not take the job of court stenographers but will make them “more efficient and reliable.”

“For sure we will train our people and we will redo their skills. That is our commitment. Text-to-voice will not eliminate the job of stenographers but will make them more efficient and reliable so a learning machine is being trained to see the problem in our jurisdiction,” Gesmundo said.

He said the use of AI technology is part of the SC’s Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022 — 2027 which will significantly improve the productivity of the courts.

Gesmundo said they will have a program for AI technology to better understand different dialects in the country.

He said they will also have to procure “good” microphones so the machines can identify who is speaking “because if you don’t have a good microphone, you will have difficulty doing that voice-to-text transcription.

“The problem is that the machine cannot recognize our words because of the accent and dialects we are using, but in due time, the machine will understand whatever dialect in court proceedings,” he added.

For starters, he said they will redesign their courtrooms and have them equipped with TV sets where parties can watch the proceedings now being held in English.

He said the proceedings will be automatically translated “in the dialect for that particular case” which can be understood by the audience.

“That will be part of the technology development that we are doing,” he said.
